Candela envisions a transport system where today’s big, and often underutilized, diesel ferries are replaced by nimbler fleets of smaller P-12 Shuttles. More similar in size to an electric bus than a traditional big diesel ferry, the P-12 carries 30 passengers. The higher service speeds will allow the new P-12 to shuttle more passengers farther and faster than any other electric ship, and will be able to service up to 60 nm routes at 30 mph cruise speeds. The P-12 can operate in urban waterways at higher speeds than traditional passenger boats because it creates virtually no wake. If you can make ships that are faster than cars and buses during rush hour traffic, that use very little energy and have low operational costs, we can unlock the potential of our waterways for mass transit, says Erik Eklund, Chief Executive for Commercial Vessels at Candela Technology. “Waterways are fantastic transport corridors, but they’re very much forgotten in the discussion about how to make urban transport more sustainable. The P-12, developed by Stockholm boat builder Candela Technology, consumes about 3-4 kWh per nautical mile, which is one tenth of a conventional ship and comparable to the energy consumption of a modern electric-hybrid bus, making it the most energy efficient fast ship ever built.įlying above the water surface on computer-guided hydrofoils, which reduce drag considerably, it ushers in a new era of waterborne transport in cities. During the Interferry conference on October 1-5, Candela will showcase its unique technology that can speed up Seattle’s ferry rides dramatically. Our guide Kathy made the trip wonderful. The Candela P-12 Shuttle -the world’s fastest all-electric passenger ship-will hit the water in 2023, flying passengers at a service speed of 30 mph without wake, noise, exhaust fumes or CO2 emissions. It was three weeks of doctor’s visits at a prestige Boston hospital to make the same diagnosis. Finally, while we had an itinerary, we were able to make changes as needed or desired.A great trip.P.S. Our guide took her to a doctor and then to a lab for testing. (I remember my parent’s cars from the fifties-modern are much nicer.)At all times, we felt welcome no matter what we did: drinks and song at someone’s home in Havana (a highlight), walking through the artist’s area and into homes in Havana, to a samba lesson, taking a standing tour in an ox-cart, to drinking just roasted and ground coffee on a farm, to visiting the Che museum/monument…well, you can see the scope of our activities. In the middle of the trip, my partner did not feel well. Our first driver was with us for eight days, and a second driver was with us for the remainder. This was an intense relief as the airport was crazy and we had custom issues. In essence, we went from Havana to the western edge, and then from Havana to the the east, ending in Santiago de Cuba. Our guide and a driver met us at the airport and drove us to our hotel. In other words, they didn’t just give us something off-the-shelf. Our trip’s itinerary was built by a series of conversations. Instead, we wanted an introductory grand tour. When you look at the itineraries of Cuba trip, the focus is on Havana. The trip came close to being a bucket-list trip, and it really wasn’t a top priority before we went.
